Male Fertility Testing: At-Home Semen Analysis

As a practice specializing in fertility, we know that male fertility is fifty percent of the fertility equation. When working with a couple, we carefully consider the reproductive health of both partners. Blue Ova is excited to partner with Fellow, a semen analysis company based right here in San Francisco that has merged technology, science, and user-friendly design to create a revolutionary at-home semen analysis kit. There are several mail-in kit companies, but Fellow is the only mail-in test that operates its own CLIA-certified lab. For us, this was a critical factor in partnering with Fellow. Operating their own lab allows them to ensure that every test is done to the highest quality standards ensuring you get the most accurate results possible.

The Fellow Kit removes barriers of travel, cost, discomfort, and stigma. After ordering a kit from their website (at a reduced cost to Blue Ova patients), the kit is sent to your home with thorough collection instructions. This gives the individual the ability to relax in their own home and provide their sample at a convenient time for them. Their sample is then placed back in the kit and dropped off at a post office to arrive at a lab for analysis. They have engineered all the steps to provide accurate results that are sent within a few weeks. We have been able to view these results in our clinic, providing us with invaluable information in many of our patient's’ fertility journeys.

One of the most important things to know and remember throughout a semen analysis is that there are simple solutions to problems that may arise. Testicles are constantly producing new sperm. Sperm regenerate every 72-90 days. If a simple lifestyle change is recommended, those changes can have clear impacts on sperm very quickly. A semen analysis might reveal motility and morphology problems, which acupuncture can have a significantly positive effect on. If the analysis reveals a varicocele or a problem specifically addressed by a urologist, we have referrals and can support you in seeking treatment. Equally, because new sperm is created every 72-90 days, a lot can change, and a “good” semen analysis last year does not necessarily provide us a current picture. Thus we recommend re-testing every 6-12 months.

Lifestyle changes such as smoking cessation (tobacco and marijuana), nutritional, supplement and herbal support, and exercise can improve sperm quality. These are all topics we address in our acupuncture sessions. Our practitioners are excited to design individual treatment plans that are manageable and effective. Acupuncture can also help manage chronic medical conditions, which is crucial to sperm health and general well-being.

Confronting the stigma around male fertility is a complex task but deeply entwined with a semen analysis. It is difficult for any person to confront problems with their health, but we know that there is a specific stigma around men having problems with fertility. Our culture is inundated with the stereotype of a “tough, virile man,” and that image has lasting effects on men. US research shows that men with health problems are more likely than women to have had no recent contact with a doctor regardless of income or ethnicity. According to a study by the Commonwealth Fund, “Three times as many men as women had not seen a doctor in the previous year; more than half of all men had not had a physical exam or cholesterol test in the previous year. In general, men who have the most traditional, macho views about masculinity are the least likely to get routine check-ups and necessary medical care.” We know that these false notions of masculinity have extremely compromising effects on men, their health, and their communities. All men have a right to reach their optimal health and wellness, and their fertility is an essential part of that wellness.

We are proud of the men in our practice and community who have completed a semen analysis and who acknowledge that they are equal partners in the fertility process. Our health is entwined with the health of our partnerships. Taking care of ourselves is a crucial part of taking care of our communities.
