Balancing Hormones After Birth Control

Balancing Hormones after Birth Control.jpeg

Having the freedom to choose our form of birth control is both liberating and a very important part of our modern society. Unfortunately, the use of synthetic hormones can lead to the disruption of our natural hormone cycles. These birth control methods release synthetic hormones that do not follow the natural ebb and flow of your bodies endocrine system.  Synthetic hormones disrupt our menstrual cycles and prevent pregnancy, once hormone birth control is discontinued there are many ways to help re-balance our natural body chemistry and get our reproductive system into tip top shape!

In some cases, it may take up to a year for your body to self-regulate and regain a normal and healthy hormonal cycle as is often the case with use of Injectable Progestin (Depo-Provera). Menstruation will have stopped completely resulting in a longer wait for menstruation to return. Thankfully there are many great ways to balance your body’s hormones to their natural state, increase fertility and prepare the body for conception.

The keys to conceiving after birth control include supporting the hormonal feedback loop, optimizing egg health, cervical fluid, and uterine health overall. The first step is to have a balanced and healthy diet. Eating whole foods and nourishing your body properly will set the foundation for balancing hormones. Synthetic hormones affect levels of folic acid, riboflavin, vitamin B6, vitamin B12, vitamin C, vitamin E and zinc, which is why it is important to get as many vitamins from our food as possible. Some great supplements to assist this process are Maca root and Vitex fruit. Maca is an amazing supplement that helps support overall hormonal balance. It is essential for supporting the stress our bodies undergo from the use of synthetic hormones. Another important supplement is Vitex, which supports the hormonal feedback loop making it a great tool for regulating ovulation and restoring healthy menstrual cycles. It has been shown to produce the best results when used for 6 months to a year consistently.

The next important step is to focus on achieving healthy cervical fluid. This goes hand in hand with restoring a healthy menstrual cycle.  Fertilaid CM and Evening Primrose Oil are lifesavers when it comes to cervical fluid. Cervical fluid may be thickened substantially by the hormones in birth control. Fertilaid CM addresses this by promoting vascular relaxation and circulation to the reproductive organs before and during ovulation. It is also so helpful because it increases endometrial secretions that assist the preparation of the uterine lining for implantation.  In addition, evening primrose oil is another important supplement for supporting healthy cervical fluid. Evening primrose oil has an array of benefits for fertility including promoting an increase in cervical fluid production. It contains omega-6 fatty acids that make up prostaglandin E, which plays an important role in female fertility because it regulates hormones that act on the reproductive system directly. For Evening primrose oil, if you are actively trying to conceive you only take it cycle day 2 through 14 (or ovulation, if you know when you ovulate). Another important tip for optimal cervical fluid is to make sure to drink enough water daily. Sperm need a healthy medium for conception making the quality of cervical fluid a top concern. Healthy cervical fluid allows the sperm to swim freely through the cervix. A sperm friendly lubricant such as Pre-seed Fertility-Friendly Lubricant can also be of great benefit in this regard. Pre-seed mimics your own fertile fluids and will keep sperm safe without harming them like other lubricants.

While you’re at it, treat yourself to an abdominal massage! Increasing circulation to the reproductive system is one of the many benefits of the Arvigo Techniques of Maya Abdominal Therapy®. This ancient practice can help to decongest reproductive organs by increasing blood and lymph flow as well as guiding the uterus to its optimal position. It is a great way to stimulate circulation and aid fertility as well as menstrual disorders, while being a non-invasive and soothing experience.

Last but certainly not least Traditional Chinese Medicine uses ancient and established methods of balancing the endocrine and neurological functions within our bodies. Acupuncture and Chinese herbs have been shown to regulate the menstrual cycle, benefit overall menstrual health, and address PMS and mood symptoms. It has even been shown to improve ovarian blood flow and encourage a thicker uterine lining to improve embryo implantation. Together all of these methods are a great way to tackle rebalancing hormones. The most important thing to remember is to be patient and love your body!
